Computer Commuter

As promised, we want to share with our readers a great program now being used in Lac qui Parle County in southwestern Minnesota.

In 2007, “Our Broadband Quest” began in Lac qui Parle County. After much research, meetings, grant writing, and more meetings, an agreement was announced in August 2010 to lay 647 miles of fiber-optic cable as part of a $9.7 million project to bring free high-speed Internet infrastructure to all houses and businesses in the county.

In addition, another part of the broadband initiative involved the use of a mobile lab, like a bookmobile. So also in August 2010, their Computer Commuter was launched. This is a bus that travels to six very small communities in the county and offers FREE access to computers, internet service and personal training. Interestingly, in a breakdown of users by age, 86% of the users of the Computer Commuter mobile lab are 50+ years old!

What a great idea! Learn more about the programĀ here.
